The fashion industry produces more carbon emissions than aviation and shipping combined. Athletic wear, specifically, is one of the worst offenders — synthetic fabrics take hundreds of years to break down, and most pieces get worn a handful of times before ending up in landfill.
SportyStar exists to interrupt that cycle. Not at scale, not through corporate offsetting — just piece by piece, bin by bin, week by week.
What we actually do
- We use zero new materials. Every piece we sell was already in existence before we touched it.
- We extend the life of garments that would otherwise be landfilled — most Goodwill bin items that don’t sell are sent to disposal within days.
- We reduce demand for new fast-fashion athletic wear by giving premium secondhand pieces a visible, desirable home.
- We rework pieces that couldn’t be sold as-is, turning them into new products without producing any new fabric.
The rework angle
When we rework a piece — hem it, dye it, embroider it — we add value without adding material. The hoodie was already made. The fabric already exists. We just give it a new identity. Reworked pieces are the most sustainable items we sell because they represent the full arc: sourced, extended, transformed, and worn again.
What we don’t do
We don’t buy carbon offsets and call ourselves sustainable. We don’t greenwash our shipping. We don’t use the word “eco-friendly” as a marketing strategy. We source secondhand, sell secondhand, and ship as efficiently as we can. We think the most sustainable thing you can do is buy something that already exists.
